One of my favorite books Next to A Tree Grows in Brooklyn and The Secret Garden the short life of Sophie Scholl belongs to my favorites Despite it s all to well known ending I found her story uplifting and inspiring Her writings on her surroundings nature are simply wonderful The events which led to her execution are told succinctly
s unshakeable faith permeates to the reader With these people dying for the regime it is high time someone died against it Sophie Scholl February 1943 See also my review of At the Heart of the White Rose Letters and Diaries #of Hans and Sophie Scholl edited Inge Jens sister of Hans and #Hans and Scholl edited by Inge Jens sister of Hans and Every time I think of the group called the White Rose which is not every day but should be I feel uplifted and humbledAlways remember Hans and Sophie were not the only members of the group not the only martyrs though the best known Christoph Probst was guillotined with them on Feb 22 1943 Professor Kurt Huber Willi Graf and Alexander Schll were executed a few months later Hermann Vinke s target audience were adolescents and children which means the book is an easy read It gives an intimate look at Sophie s life with engaging stories and observations taken from those closest to her that survived Hitler s Amazing book about Sophie Scholl and the White Rose a German resistance group in Nazi Germany I read this book as a child and was blown away by Sophie s courage and the strength of her convictions a true hero in the face of adversity I have been teaching Sophie Scholl s short life in school again It never stops hurting and this ear it was particularly difficult considering the fact that than 21% of voters in my home country seem to be willing to elect an openly homophobic racist misogynist and white supremacist party with roots in fascism If the polls don t lie it might even end up the strongest party with the democratic prerogative to choose the prime minister Teaching Sophie Scholl and her group of Munich friends opposing Hitler during the Second World War in this atmosphere of hopelessness is chilling Over and over again I realise that Nazi Germany has become romanticised horror fiction in the Anglo Saxon world and this view is copied in the Scandinavian countri.
