Cue difficult reviewmay be some spoilers aheadAs much as I wanted to enjoy this story I never could connect with Lesson Planning and Classroom Management it Aven was a great character but I never really got to know her and over I don t think she knew herself We know who shes The Stalin Front: A Novel of World War II in the moment but we have no clue what her goalsn life are or what her ultimate dreams are It s clear from the story that she doesn t even know from one month to the next what she really The Nightmare Garden is going tohoping to do other than her talent for baking It s evident that she falls for Thor but she kisses Haakon tooI don t understand her reasoning for kissing one guy while shes consideringdrawn to two Look to the Mountain it feels very modern and oddn a time when kissing guys meant strong commitment or even engagement It s hard to express correctly but I think the closest I can come s that Aven s character s reactive The Space Race: The Journey to the Moon and Beyond in that shes shaped by every circumstance and doesn t have a lot of The Precarious: The Art and Poetry of Cecilia Vicuna / Vicuna, Cecilia. Esther Allen, tr. QUIPOem. Two books in one (Wesleyan Poetry) independent thoughts and goals that her lifes shaped by undefined longings than by real solid dreams Her journey from kissing one guy to marrying the other thus felt almost like her becoming an attachment to someone who had a sense of direction than for her having actually discovered her own sense of directionThor s Deafness was an excellent portrayal and I really enjoyed reading about his love for the apple orchards and the land he workedThe drinking The Color of Water issue with Thors portrayed very heavily and his drunkenness Mayan Strawberries is a key part of the story This parts all very realistic However I felt his recovery was not so realistic The doctor s attitude I could have excused for rural Bill Gates (Up Close) ignorance but on top of that they say oht all cooks out about using the cider for baking which Mistaken Mistress it doesn t and which wasn t even a concept back then teetotalers of the day according to books I ve read from the 1880s were against all forms of baked goods breads and puddings and all that had any sort of drink as anngredient because of desensitizing folks to the flavor Why not use applesauce or apple juice Bunny: A Novel in the baked goodsWriting style Bischof uses a choppy driven prose and that s hard for me sometimes becausenstead of using regular sentence fragments often sentences are deliberately fragmented by putting a period right n the middle for no reason at all Also t doesn t pair well with historic forms of expression they definitely would not have talked The Great Smog of India in fragments to that extent andt nterrupted the historical feel of the conversationSetting the apple farm tself was excellent The scenery The Sex of the Angels, the Saints in their Heaven: A Breviary is rich and easy to seen the Tryst with Prosperity imagination The historical setting not so much Seems to drift between Civil War era habits to twenties habits so without a strong setting of historyt felt fragmented In one part Popular Hits it talks about the brothers father having foughtn the war and makes t seem like they were boys but I was thinking of t having been set n the 1890s which would make them men n their fiftiesand that was just one of my mental hiccupsAven s attackthis wasn t just hard to read It was also hard to make sense of and I m not sure how I ll feel about the next book because of The Creative Habit it While I didn t like thatt happened The Rest of the Story it also felt liket threw the plot off a bit and took balance out of the ending After so much focus on the apples and the farm t felt like this vibrant part of the setting got short changed n book space because of what happened after t Several large plot elements got told n a summary sort of way Lords of Life: A History of the Kings of Thailand instead of shownn the same sort of richness other parts were described earlier n the story This gave me a sort of sense that the story unraveled at the end nstead of wrapping up muchSo ultimately the book bothered me than t pleased me despite some great momentsThanks to the publisher and NetGalley for a free review copy A favorable review was not reuired Spend but ten minutes gettin to know Thor Norgaard and you ll forget he silentYou ll learn and hear things that most men don t even know how to speak There s so much depth to this gorgeous story even especially n the gentle subtleties that Bischof tucks is so much depth to this gorgeous story even especially n the gentle subtleties that Bischof tucks her writing from the way the Norgaard brothers each represent a different facet of the Viking spirit to the way the variety of apples Simon Spatz: From Holocaust to Halifax, A Story of Survival and Success in the orchardtself reminded me of the different dimensions to the story As tenderly as possible the author weaves A Life in Two Worlds in layers of sibling rivalry domestic abuse alcoholism racism and greed with even tenderly drawn layers of hope healing and courage Thiss a story that does not shy away from the harshness of life or sin But The Hitler Kiss: A Memoir of the Czech Resistance it s also a story that boldly proclaims freedom for the Especially Thor oh my heart His lovable giant self made all the endearing by the ways he compensates for the fact that he can t speak or hear won me overn the first few pagesIn Thor s case the absence of speech or sound does not mean the absence of conversation or emotion and the way the author has so lovingly crafted his character speaks louder than any voice could Even down to subtle details such as the cadence of his sign language the way he doesn t realize how loud his movements are his breathing patterns etc his characterization s spot on and we get a clearer picture of his heart n a way that we might not otherwise Bischof s portrayal of Thor as not only Deaf mute but also an alcoholic sets aside everything we ve come to expect Tracks and Sign of Insects and Other Invertebrates: A Guide to North American Species in our heroes and I LOVE IT The depth of his storys all encompassing wrapping around you until you can barely breathe from the exuisite beauty of Grace and redemptionI could seriously go on and on and on I haven t even talked yet about Aven and her relationship with Thor I haven t mentioned Ida or Cora or Jorgen or Haaken or Peter These characters all captured me
