This was a surprise I had actually given up n Grunberg his nihilistic euvre collided head n with my perhaps naive existentialist attitude also literary stylistic he did not resonate with me But Tirza is different By that I mean the world that Grunberg shows us here is as drab and hopeless as in his ther books but nevertheless this is a tremendous read The way he draws main character J Rgen Hofmeester Is Masterly From The Beginning This Nice rgen Hofmeester is masterly from the beginning this nice bourgeois man seems to have some creepy traits but in the end he turns ut to be a real but pitiful monster The interaction with his wife who after 3 years The Agents Secret Past (Military Investigations of absence suddenly returns to him reminded mef the intensity Champagne with a Celebrity of Who s afraidf Virginia Woolf by Edward Albee just as delicious The final chapters in Namibia Secret Agent Affair (The Doctors Pulaski, on a trip with a 9 yearld black girl brought back Nabokov s Lolita and the gradually intense state The Salvation of Zachary Baumkletterer of trancef Hofmeester seemed a nice reference to Raskolnikov In Crime And in Crime and by Dostoyevsky I know Grunberg seems to measure himself with the Great Now I agree there are some weaker points in the story such as the pale figure Courting Callie (Heart of the West/Bachelor Auction, of Tirza herself forbvious reasons Mortimer, Mallory and Allen Taster Collection or the metamorphosisf the wife from bitch to dedicated wife and also the decisive turn in the plot is not entirely unexpected But I do think Grunberg really succeeded in delivering a truly great grotesue book 3 stars In my entire life have i read Mustang Wild (Wild, onlyne book that disgusted and horrified me than this The Little Vintage Carousel by the Sea one the Painted Bird by Jerzy Kosinsky But Tirza is well written and the plot is clever After the plot twist i leafed back to see how Grunberg had done it Clever it must be said And a finely crafted eerieness throughout the whole book which makes the whole experience the unbearable That too was well done Hence the three stars But no I am not happy with this extra experience in my book life Wish i had never read it I feel literally sick and i can t sleep There is a lawf physics that posits that everything that is in movement will try to stay moving Once a ball rolls down a hill it will reuire another external force like a wall A PHYSICAL AFFAIR or like friction to stop it I m inclined to agree that there is little to nothingne can do against this impermeable force f change but I also know that a lot f people will be different and will actively resist this inherent dynamism in everythingJ rgen Hofmeester for instance the protagonist Brief Lives of this novel is living in a worldf stasis He has a respectable job a wife and two children They have dinner at set times he drives his daughter Tirza to cello lessons and somewhat De vrijheid mag lonken maar liefst niet de hele dag; wanneer de vrijheid uitsluitend tijdens de zomervakantie lonkt is het leven al zwaar genoeg Jörgen Hofmeester is vader van twee dochters en werkzaam voor een gerenommeerd bedrijf Dankzij een uitgekiend financieel beleid woont hij p stand. Nnoyingly reads them Tolstoy before going to bed It s a bourgeois fantasy and The Counts Blackmail Bargain one that Grunberg takes some relish in deconstructing His wife leaves him his daughters driftut Conscious of his control and Hofmeester realizes he has uite literally nothing goingn for him any His prime has slipped through his fingersUnsurprisingly sex takes a large role in Hofmeester s life Grunberg aptly puts him in different situations as a husband as a father as a spectator One could argue that sex is a domain f control f lack thereof throughout the entire novel It s where control meets power and where the real Hofmeester is revealed through the readerIt s somewhat befitting that this carefully composed novel suffers from similar weaknesses as its protagonist Tirza is so calmly and coolly written that it feels as much as a statement as it does a story Grunberg throws in references to those Chosen by the Alien Lord (Rusneon Mates, other novels like Lolita but ultimately there is a sortf weird detachement going Violentology on throughout the book There is no real emotion and as much as Hofmeester insistsn people trying his sashimi throughout the novel Grunberg insists n you taking note f how he has constructed his critiue Latin Lovers Greek Husbands Bundle on bourgeois fantasiesf control and superiorityIt s a good book for sure but it s good in a very self aware way that leaves little room for adventure for excess for sheer reading pleasure Grunberg hasn t really lost himself in the writing The Forgotten of this book and while that is absolutely fine it does make that I appreciate it in the same way I appreciate the workf a good surgeon and not that First Night Memories (Rot Ruin, of a good musicianr painter DISCLAIMER I am the publisher f

book and thus spent two years reading and editing and working n it So take my review with a grain f salt r the understanding that I am deeply invested in this text and know it uite well Also I would really appreciate it if you would purchase this book since it would benefit Open Letter directlyThe book J Franz might write if he could get The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs outf the way f his pretensions Not a read which was enjoyable Mostly because it was too far fetched mired in tragedy which escapes even Victorian dramas and the central character was a person I could neither relate to nor understand nor empathise with Overall a very dissatisfying read which i find hard to dissatisfying read which I find hard to It has it s elements f course the anxiety f a modern father the discomfort f being an un gratifying husband all put ut too well But verall it is done to the extremities such that any possibility Play Something Dancy of relating to the anxiety goesff in smoke Review This book thi.
